This 280 E is a truly unique specimen, as its first owner had the very basic 123-series model, still brand new, taken to AMG – then a small firm – to have it extensively modified.
In fact, only the bodywork remained in its original state, as the entire drivetrain, including all chassis components, was replaced.
The engine comes from the then brand-new 450 SLC 5.0 and its power was increased to 275 hp through a few modifications.
The rear axle with limited-slip differential and the chassis with braking system come from the W116 S-Class, the 450 SE.
And last but not least, the whole thing was paired with a 5-speed sports gearbox from Getrag to make the driving experience even more exhilarating.
The conversion costs amounted to more than double the purchase price of the original 280 E.
Even today, this car is still a huge amount of fun, with its understated elegance, sport-tuned chassis and the engine’s unbridled power.
