When the 500 E was launched in 1990, Mercedes titled the brochure “Fire and Silk”.
And they were not wrong, because from the outside it looks almost like a standard mid-range saloon, yet beneath the bonnet lies the technology of the SL.
To accommodate all this, the bodywork was widened at the front and rear wings.
As the entire assembly did not fit in with the production line for standard cars from Sindelfingen, final assembly was carried out at Porsche in Zuffenhausen.
The engineers at Porsche also provided some assistance with the development of this special Mercedes.
The original price at first registration was DM 139,581.60, including 14% VAT. By way of comparison, a 190 D was listed at DM 35,796.00.
