From mid-2003 to summer 2004, a limited-edition special model (1,383 units) of the BMW M3 E46 series was produced, bearing the CSL designation. The abbreviation CSL stands for ‘Coupé Sport Leichtbau’ (Sports Coupé Lightweight Construction). This model features a lighter body and a more powerful engine producing 360 hp.
The M3 CSL features, for example, several vehicle components made from CFRP – door panels, centre console, roof, inserts in the front and rear bumpers – as well as aluminium doors, boot lid and bonnet. Some chassis components are made from lightweight magnesium parts.
